DOPE // 何よりも君がいい

一昔前、アメリカのポップスを聴き厭きてしまい、日本の音楽ばかり聴いていた頃があります。高校時代は友達と一緒にドライブしたりしてどこかへ出掛ける時以外は専ら日本の音楽を流して生活をしていたのです。その頃は前回の投稿で取上げたDreams Come Trueや鬼束ちひろ、広沢タダシ、Dragon Ash、宇多田ヒカル等々のCDを毎日の様にエンドレスループで回していたものです。

About 10 years ago, I went through a period where I listened almost exclusively to Japanese music. In my high school years, I listened to Japanese music all the time I wasn't with friends, driving in their cars or going out somewhere. At the time, I had CDs by Dreams Come True--whom I introduced in my last write-up--as well as Chihiro Onitsuka, Tadashi Hirosawa, Dragon Ash, Hikaru Utada, and on and on all on endless repeat.

しかし、面白いことにも仕事をするために来日してみると、アメリカの音楽が恋しくて仕方ないくらいでした。同じ時頃に「踊る合唱部GLEE」が放送され大ヒットを記録していたので、時代を越える米流ポップスの「らしさ」を再び見出すことになりました。そして、数多いアーティストの中でも話題を呼び起こし、時として物議を醸すことさえある現代ポップス界の女王と呼ばれるレディ・ガガにも注目するようにもなり、大分遅かったけれども彼女のファンにも仲間入りしました。

However, perhaps a bit ironically, when I came to Japan for work, I found myself longing for American music. Around the same time, Glee had become a broadcast network hit. Listening to those reimaginings of pop classics and show tunes, I rediscovered the delightful spirit of American pop. Among the numerous artists who caught my eye was one who was at once the most talked-about and at the center of not a few controversies. That's how, though I was late to the party, I became a fan of Lady Gaga. 

彼女について多くのことが書かれており、ボクの乏しい日本語の表現力ではその「芸術」に相応しい評論は無理です。でも、今日はとても大好きな曲を紹介します。彼女の最新のEPに収録されている「DOPE」です。昨年11月「ARTPOP」が発売になった頃、彼女は自身が憂鬱に陥り、暗い日々を送った時期があったことを打ち明け、その真っ最中にこの曲を書き下ろすことで、過去の後悔とファンや大切な人たちへの愛情を綴り上げ、表現することが出来たと語っています。

So much has been written about her, and I have little hope to write a critique of her art with my poor Japanese, so I will not attempt to do so. Still, I want to introduce a song of hers I really like today. It's from her newest EP, ARTPOP, which went on sale last November. It's called Dope. Gaga has spoken about her descent into depression and the dark days she lived out. In the midst of that, she wrote about her regrets, her love for her fans and those dearest to her, and this song was born of those emotions.

日本語に訳してみると幾つか難しいところが見つかりました。真っ先に出くわしたのはタイトル。「DOPE」は英語圏で「違法薬物（不法薬物とも）」を指す俗語です。ここでガガはドープという言葉を使って、依存症の苦しさを敢えて身近に、優しく表現しているのだろうと察します。「I need you more than dope (ドラッグよりも君が要るよ)」と何度も歌う彼女はドラッグの誘惑も確かに強いですが君への想いの方が強いのだと言い表しているでしょう。何よりも君がいいという気持ちを伝えようとしているのではないかと聴いて、思いました。

歌詞を母語から第2ヶ国語に直すのって、大変な作業だって聞いていたのですが、やはり難しいです。是非この曲を聴いて、ボクの愚訳を読まれたら、感想を聞かせてくたさい。Facebookでもメールでも、どの手段でも大歓迎です。

I ran into some issues when I attempted the translation of this into Japanese. First off was the title. Dope refers, of course, to illicit drugs. Gaga uses this word to evoke familiarity and a softness around the difficulties of addition. She croons, "I need you more than dope" to suggest that while the draw of drugs is strong, her love and emotional attachment to the addressee in the song is stronger. I need you more than anything is the feeling I felt she must be trying to convey here. Anyway, it was a good exercise in translating from my native language to my second language, which is every bit as hard as they say.
