This year, Dreams Come True turns 25! I'm sure some of you know already, but I'm a big DCT fan. In 1997, they set their sights on the center of the pop music world and set off to break into the American music market. And, on 24 July 1998, they released an all-English version of their studio album from the previous year entitled "SING OR DIE -Worldwide Version-." Unfortunately, the album failed to hit it big and the band only gained ground with small pockets in the US.
けれど或る日、中学生のボクはオレゴン州ポートランド市郊外にある日本総合スーパー「宇和島屋」の店内にある紀伊国屋書店で日本のCDをちらりと見ていたら、或るアルバムを見かた。花柄のワンピースを身に纏った女性が満面の笑みを浮かべながら、オフショットのどこかを見ているというジャケット写真に「SING OR DIE （＝死ぬ覚悟で歌う）」という実に風変わりなタイトル。しかし、何よりも目に付くのはバンド名だった。DREAMS COME TRUEという。つまり、「夢は叶う」ということだ。この語句は単に「夢が叶う」という一時的な現象を表しているのではなく、「DREAMS」に「S」がつくことから「夢というものは叶うものである」という事実を述べているのだ。
But one day, when I was a middle school student, I was flipping through CDs at the Kinokuniya inside the Uwajimaya supermarket located in the suburbs of Portland, Oregon. What should I happen upon but a certain CD? The cover photo was of a woman in a floral print dress with a radiant smile and gazing somewhere off-camera. The title, "Sing or Die," was a little eccentric, to say the least. But what really caught my eye was the band name, Dreams Come True. This was no mere description of the phenomenon of some dream coming true; rather, it was a pronouncement that dreams come true.
すぐさま買った。
I bought it straight away.
CDを掛けてみると波の音と温かい喜びを帯びた女性の歌声と人間の鼓動が聴こえて来る。
I put the CD on to play and in came the sounds of waves and the jubilant vocals of a woman and a human heartbeat.
その後で何もかも聞こえなる。
And then, nothing.
突然、バイオリンの音が鳴り出し、そして歌い出しの言葉が掛かって来る。
Suddenly, the sound of violins rang out and the opening words.
There's nothing I really want, nothing else that I need
If you're standing by my side...
実に美しい歌声だ。
A most beautiful voice indeed.
「何も要らない、何も欲しくない、あなたが居るだけでいい」
一耳惚れだった。
It was love at first listen.
SING OR DIEを聴いてからというもの、中村正人の作曲に、吉田美和の真っ直ぐな歌詞と表現力に富んだ美声がなすドリカムのサウンドが好きで好きでたまらない。
Since listening to the album, I've been smitten with DCT's signature sound: Masato Nakamura's composition, Miwa Yoshida's lyrics and terrific voice with its depth of expression.
